![]() ![]() I did fully locate the OEM rear-fog wiring. I also believe the separate wiring harness is a bit more efficient and spills a tad more light on the road, as it's connected straight to the battery. I like working the fogs independently of the rest of the system for added lumens during dark country driving. Ultimately, I decided to utilize my ECStuning wiring harness and I'm very glad I did. As described previous, you can simply ground to the chassis and get them working with high-beams. Once you got that far you may or may not have working fogs, and they wouldn't work with high-beams on (that's the role of the factory relay). On top of that, you'd have to source a relay and relay bucket to plug into the fuse block source and install all the wire ends to slip into the relay bucket and wire in the interior portion as well. I could only trace it so far before I lost it. In my endeavors, I found that the factory early-mk4 wiring terminates somewhere under the dash in the OEM loom. Later MKIV's without the rear fog icon, with the Euroswitch, you had to modify the circuit board on the switch to accept a 3mm LED. So, in order to wire the rear fogs, you just need to tap into the existing wire at the NSL location. Rear fogs, the early early MKIV instrument clusters were wired for the rear fog icon. Then connect to the ground (if you want OEM, then you splice into the high beam) of your choice. It would be best to remove the factory wire at pin #2, you have to slide out the purple lock on the headlight connector to do that, then install the wires ECS supplied. You can change the ground to a chassis ground and it won't shut off with the high beams. Secondary to the is how the the relay is grounded (to the high beam lead). The relay is there also to shorten the length of wiring (which length factors into resistance) going to the fog lights. It uses the base of of the light assembly as a ground. ![]() first you can't interchange H1 and H3 as first, as NB_TDI pointed out H1 as an axial filament vs H3 having a transverse filament 2) the base on both bulbs is different & 3) the H1 is different in the electrical connection. there's a lot of misinformation on this thread. They had no idea what to do and offered little help. I'm thinking I can just piece together the rest of the factory pieces and make it work, no? Am I crazy for trying to attempt that? Would it be better to just cut out the factory wiring and put the ECS stuff in? The rear fog bulb fit right into the taillight housing, no problem or mod needed. I do have a wire at the rear of the car for rear fogs. I do not have the #4 relay under the dash for fogs. Starting from the front and working my way backwards, I have the factory #2 wires in the headlight plugs. I decided to attempt install this afternoon and ran into a very odd mess of random factory bits already installed. I also ordered ECS front fog wire harness, rear fog kit, and a euro switch. My TDI is a 1999.5 and was manufactured in Germany. I ordered R32 headlight assemblies with fogs for my TDI. I realize this is an older thread but I've run into this problem today. ![]()
